Spring has come early to Nebraska this year, and one noticeable feature that’s grabbing attention is roadside litter. Adopt-a-Highway volunteers in Nebraska are gearing up for the 22nd annual Great Nebraska Trash-Off, scheduled April 14th to May 13th.
Denise Wallman is the state coordinator of the Adopt-a-Highway program, which is part of the Nebraska Department of Roads. (play audio :29)
Wallman says there are almost one thousand individuals and organizations in the state that are part of the Adopt-a-Highway program. Volunteers commit to clean up at least a two-mile section along a state highway. (play audio :19)
Wallman says civic groups and individuals are eligible to adopt a section of highway in Nebraska. They volunteer to pick up trash twice a year, and the state supplies the trash bags, safety vests, and signs.
