Mr. Hjetland was born on August 1, 1921, to Perry and Sophia Hjetland of Everest, Kansas. He lived all of his life on the family farm near Everest, until a move with his wife, Helen, to Hiawatha in 1989.

Nicholas was a native of Falls City, Nebraska and has been a long-time resident of Gulfport. He attended Harrison Central High School, where he was a trumpet player in the marching band. He overcame many obstacles through Teen Challenge. He was a Certified Welder and a CDL Truck Driver.
