Atchison County Holds Government Day
03/14/2012

Students within Atchison County learned the functions of different types of county government Wednesday at the courthouse.

Around 70 high school students from Atchison High School, ACCHS and Maur Hill Mount Academy listened to a lecture Wednesday morning from Randall Allen, Executive Director of the Kansas Association of Counties.

He outlined the basic forms and roles of county government, population and square mileage of surrounding states and counties, and the difference between federal, state and county governments.

The students then broke into small groups to shadow the jobs of county elected officials, including the County Commissioners, Sheriff, Appraiser, Attorney, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Clerk, Court Clerk and Judge.
