The Pawnee City Indians came up just short of winning the Class D1 State Championship Saturday at the Devaney Center in Licnoln. Top ranked St. Mary's defeated teh Indians 56-54 to win the title. St. Mary's finishes the season 28-0. Pawnee City finished the season 25-4.
The Cardinals hit 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to help overcome an 8-point deficit in the final period. Adam Moon scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for St. Mary's. Tate Sibbel and Tyler Timmerman also were in double figures for St. Mary's.
For the Indians sophomore Chase Grizzle came off the bentch to lead Pawnee City with 13 points. Scott Borcher had 11 and Devon Marteny scored 10 to lead Pawnee City. St. Mary's was able to hold the Indians leading scorers Hadley Sejkora and Garrett Borcher to 9 and 8 points each in the game.
