Marysville @ Nemaha Valley (1st round Sub-State Class 3A---Girl's Varsity)
"Player to Bank On:" Blair Russell (Marysville) 19 points
It was a rematch of a first round matchup from the Hiawatha Invitational earlier this season between the Marysville Bulldogs and the Nemaha Valley Raiders, this time with more on the line as it was first round of sub-state action. Marysville one the earlier matchup 56-37 in the Hiawatha Invitational and had one the previous five matchups between the two. It didn't come easy but the Bulldogs made it six in a row over Nemaha Valley, taking them down 57-43. The final score is not truly indicitive of how hard Nemaha Valley fought in the contest and Marysville fought to hold on to their lead.
It was tied at the end of the first quarter at 13-13, but then to start the second quarter off Marysville went on a run to take control of the game with a lead that amounted to eight points at the end of the first half, 28-20. Nemaha Valley would make pushes in the second half, most notably by the hand of senior, Mckayla Brezina who scored 18 of the Raiders 23 second half points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bulldogs hot shooting in the game and the fact they had three players in double figures, as Marysville seemed to answer Nemaha Valley when the Raiders mounted any run in the contest.
Senior, Blair Russell lead the way for Marysville finishing the night with 19 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter. She joined in double digits on the night by senior's, Maggie Leonard and Maggie Schotte who tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively. The 15-7 second quarter is when Marysville opened up their lead and took control of the game.
With the loss Nemaha Valley finishes the season 13-8; while Marysville improved to 11-10 on the season and moved on to the semifinals of the Class 3A Sabetha sub-state where they will take on the number one seed ACCHS Tigers on Friday at 6:00pm, which can be heard on 103.9 KNZA, along with the other semifinal contest Horton vs. Sabetha at 7:30pm.
