The city of Atchison will soon join the list of cities with community gardens.
In Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Atchison City Commission, Commissioner unanimously granted the park board and public works department to apply for a five thousand dollar grant to properly prepare the ground at the abandoned baseball fields at Morrow Park.

There are initially expected to be 12 to 15, 18 by 20 plots.
Commissioners also unanimously passed an ordinance updating the planting of trees in city right of ways.
The “tree police” will now consist of city staff, instead of city commissioners.
The list of what trees or shrubs are allowed will be posted on the city web site in the near future.
Commissioners unanimously passed the 44 thousand dollar purchase of two 2012 Dodge Chargers for the police force.
The force will now have all Charger cruisers, replacing the two existing Chevrolet Impalas.
The Police Department will bid out the Impalas for what’s expected to be 20 percent profit.
After lengthy discussion, Commissioners unanimously approved a KDHE mandated nutrient study for the wastewater treatment plant.
The study that is expected to not exceed 29 thousand 100 dollars will focus on the elimination of nitrogen and phosphorous from the water supply.
City manager Trey Cocking reported to commissioners that the part to re-install the stoplight on 10th and Main has been ordered and the nine to 12 week arrival period has now been activated.
Cocking also made a comment on the growing demand for a taxi cab service in the community.
