Calls Claiming To Be DEA Proven False
A new scam-this one involving an elaborate set-up including a fake return phone number claiming to be a direct line to the DEA-comes to Brown County, with local residents targeted in the attempted rip-off.
Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says despite the realism involved in the telephone calls being received, the callers are not who they claim to be(Play Audio :12 seconds)
Merchant says it appears the callers have gained background information on their would be victims, and that's why specific individuals are being targeted(Play Audio :27 seconds)
According to Merchant, the scammers have gone to great lengths in their attempt to bilk their would be victims of money(Play Audio :18 seconds)
Merchant says until his office can be notified, those who receive the call should provide no personal information of any kind, and hang-up quickly after they tell the caller to take their issue to the Sheriff.
