Although it's not exactly an “internet kill switch,” proposed legislation, in the United States Congress comes close, according to opponents, including Senator Jerry Moran.
The Kansas Republican has introduced legislation, counter to the much talked about Stop Online Privacy Act, or SOPA(Play Audio 20 secs)
Joining Moran,in his concerns against a loss of innovation are some of the biggest names in the world of technology, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter.
Nonetheless, support for SOPA has been strong, despite what opponents call a questionable amount of power being handed over to the government in deciding which sites can be shut down at any time(Play Audio 35 secs)
Opponents to SOPA also point out that the legislation, as written, could be used to silence sites that express unpopular political viewpoints or ideas.
Good news for Moran, and other opponents, came at the start of the weekend, when House SOPA sponsors agreed to drop a key provision that would have required service providers to block access to international sites accused of piracy.
In the Senate, six previous supporters have requested that a January 24th vote on the bill be postponed.
However, opponents, including Moran, continue to watch the situation closely, with observers saying that despite the changes, it's likely that the proposed, popular bill could rise again.
