Renewing Passports
04/01/2016

(KLZA)--In 2007, the U.S. Department of State experienced an unprecedented surge in passport applications, issuing over 18 million passports as a result of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.  The initiative required those traveling by air to Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada to obtain a passport.

The demand was so great that temporary processing centers were established in response to the heavy demand.  Nearly ten years later those passports are beginning to expire.  AAA says that because of the heavy demand for renewals this year, and since some countries restrict entry if the passport expires within six months of the traveler’s scheduled return date, those with passports expiring this year or next year are encouraged to renewal their passports early.
