(KNZA)--The fatal shooting of a 50-year-old man by a Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper has left his Omaha, Nebraska family in mourning, and questioning the death.
Thomas Schroeder was shot and killed Monday night in Holt County, Missouri during what the patrol says was a struggle with the trooper following a traffic stop.
However, Schroeder's mother, Donna Bridgeford, has questions(Play Audio)
Also questioning the reasons behind the shooting is Schroeder's nephew, Alex Bridgeford(Play Audio)
The Patrol says after a failed sobriety test, the trooper told Schroeder he was under arrest. Schroeder refused and went back to his vehicle to leave.
The trooper tried to stop Schroeder with mace, but that had little effect on the 6-foot-6 and 250 pound Schroeder.
Missouri Highway Patrol Sergeant Sheldon Lyon says the trooper shot and killed Schroeder in order to defend himself in the ensuing physical struggle, using his gun as his last line of defense(Play Audio)
Court Records show Schroeder had a criminal history in Nebraska for theft, robbery, and drugs, and spent several years in the state penitentiary.
The Highway Patrol is continuing the investigation.
