(KTNC) - U.S. Senate candidate Bob Kerrey stopped in Falls City Sunday, as the campaign in the race to succeed retiring Senator Ben Nelson enters the final two weeks. Kerrey, a Democrat and former Nebraska Governor and Senator, is seeking his former seat against Republican Deb Fischer.
Kerrey explained why he thinks he’s the best choice to represent Nebraska in the U.S. Senate.
Kerrey said he’d be able to work with Republicans to achieve bipartisan reforms and balance the federal budget. He says steps need to be taken to shore up Medicare and Social Security. (play audio :37)
Kerrey says Medicare is more difficult than Social Security. He favors a plan to increase the amount of income subject to Social Security tax from the current $110,000 to $160,000 over the next 30 years. He says he doesn’t support “dramatic” changes to the Social Security eligibility age, and wouldn’t move the eligibility age for Medicare.
Most public opinion polls show Fischer leading Kerrey, though Kerrey says Fischer’s lead has narrowed to five percentage points, and he says he’s happy with how the campaign is going. (play audio :25)

Kerrey spoke to supporters Sunday at the Grand Weaver Hotel in Falls City.
