Long anticipated repairs to flood-ravaged portions of the Steamboat Trace Trail are set to get underway later this spring. Work is planned to start around June 1st on repairs to the southern portion of the trail after the Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors approved a contract with Kreifels Conservation of Nebraska City to do the work. The company submitted the low bid of $140,486.
NRD General Manager Bob Hilske says the repairs will fix two years of flooding – from 2010 and 2011. (play audio :31 “...damage occurred.”)
Hilske says the extent of the damage varies widely. There are places where they’ll just have to lay a couple inches of rock on the trail, and other areas that will require more extensive repairs. (play audio :31 “…gully washed out.”)
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pick up 75-percent of the cost of the project, with the remainder coming from local NRD funds. Hilske says many people have asked about the status of the trail. (play audio :36)
The Steamboat Trace from Peru to Brownville will remain closed until the repairs are complete, which Hilske hopes will be sometime in mid-July. The northern section of the trail, from Peru to Nebraska City, is open.
