NRD Board Considers Well Permit Applications
04/18/2012

The Nemaha NRD Board of Directors approved three well permit applications, and delayed action on another application, during its April meeting last week.
The board granted approval for permits to drill irrigation wells to Marjorie Bartels southwest of Sterling and Kelvin Korver south of Panama.  The board also granted permission for Charles Schmidt to drill an irrigation well east of Cortland, with restrictions regarding the placement of the well in relation to his neighbor’s existing irrigation well.
The board postponed action on a fourth permit for Mike and Gary Bierman northwest of Shubert.  Action was delayed pending approval of the Village of Shubert, as the proposed well is within the village’s one-mile corporate limit.
In related action, the board voted to not allow any irrigation permits for the lake involved with Middle Big Nemaha dam site 9, south of Crab Orchard.  The board took the action after hearing from landowners involved with the site regarding a permit requested by one of the owners.  Concern was expressed that irrigation would adversely affect the surface area of the lake, which is somewhat shallow.
The board also decided to not allow irrigation from the reservoir at Middle Big Nemaha dam site 3 west of St. Mary, either.  Larry Eckert had requested a 10-year irrigation agreement for water from that site.  The board denied the request even though other area landowners had not voiced objections to the request.
In other action, the board voted to expand the NRD Clerk’s position in the Auburn NRCS office to 40 hours per week.  The position had been a part-time position.
