The Omaha Public Power District announced Monday that is has distributed more than $27 million in 2011 in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 counties in its service territory. The annual payments take the place of property and other taxes, and are based on OPPD’s gross revenues from the sale of electricity in incorporated cities and villages in its service territory.
The largest payment, more than 22-million dollars, went to Douglas County.
In far southeast Nebraska, Nemaha County received payment of $36,451; Johnson County $13,414; Richardson County received $12,712; and Otoe County received $4,409.
OPPD officials say the more than $27 million in-lieu-of-tax payments this year represent a new record, surpassing last year’s amount of $26.8 million.
County treasurers will distribute the funds to various taxing bodies in each county.
