1,001 Salutes Needed For American Veterans

(KNZA)--America’s veterans will be honored in a special way at this year’s Halloween Parade in Hiawatha.

“Post 66 normally has the color guard leading the parade,” said Bob Sines with Hiawatha American Legion Post 66. “This year, following the color guard will be some vintage jeeps and some Humvees from the national guard—each one carrying a veteran from one of the six wars.”

He said the convoys will include veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan.

“We need more patriotism in our country,” Sines added. “It was my goal to coordinate this for the Halloween parade because we want youth to understand what it took to get to this point in terms of our freedom and these are some of the gentlemen that did a lot to make sure these young people have a free country to live in.”

And Sines wants to make sure they’re given special recognition.

“We’d like to have 1,001 salutes this year so in addition to applause—we’ll have a salute,” he said. “The idea of 1,001 is, hopefully there’s a thousand people there that can salute in honor of these gentlemen and in addition to that, one salute for those who did not return.”

The Halloween Parade is the final event during Hiawatha’s Halloween frolic. It will kick off the evening of Halloween—Oct. 31—at 7:00.
