Charges Filed in Jefferson Co in High-Speed Chase

( KNZA )-Charges have been filed in Jefferson County against a man accused of leading officers on a two-county, high speed chase after pointing a handgun at a trooper.

The Topeka Capital Journal reports that 28-year-old Joshua Hance of Kansas City, Missouri was formally charged Friday with seven counts. Hance made his first appearance before a Jefferson County judge in Oskaloosa on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, interference with law enforcement, theft, reckless driving and driving left of center.

Hance was taken into custody last Monday afternoon after a chase that began in Jefferson County after a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper stopped a Pontiac Grand Prix on U.S. 24 Highway near Grantville for speeding.

As the trooper was completing paperwork, the Patrol says the driver backed up the car and allegedly pointed a handgun at the trooper before speeding away and leading officers from several agencies on chase lasting about 15 minutes.

The chase ended in the Oakland area of Topeka after the car struck a patrol car blocking the street.

Officers then learned the car was stolen, and a handgun was found beside the car.

Hance remains in the Jefferson County Jail on a $100,000 cash or surety bond. He will appear in court again Monday for a brief status hearing, where a preliminary hearing is expected to be set.
