Obituaries Announcements
Dr. Donald D. Griffiths, of Holton, KS, went to be with the Lord in his new home, Tuesday, September 16, 2025. He was born on March 12, 1932 to Robert Raymond and Hilma Westberg Griffiths, in Baileyville, KS.
He spent his younger years growing up in the rural areas of Frankfort and Vermillion in northern Kansas, attending grades 1-5 at Victory School, 6-8 grades at Farrar School and graduating from Frankfort High School as the Salutatorian of his class. During high school he was active on the football, basketball and baseball teams with baseball probably being his favorite sport. He also was an avid reader and the teachers had to go to surrounding schools to find new material for him to read as he had read everything they had in the library.
After high school he attended Kansas State University as a pre-vet student, where he worked in the dairy barn so he would have a place to live. The lady that lived across the street supplied meals to those that worked in the dairy barn. He was a catcher on the baseball team after trying a stint at football, where he was considered small so he decided to give up football and concentrate more on his studies and baseball. While at K-State he became a member of the ROTC which gave him a boost when he entered the Air Force. He served several years in the Air Force, exiting as Lieutenant Colonel. He later entered the Air Force Reserves.
Upon graduating from K-State, he began his veterinarian hours in the Minnesota area.
He finally found a place to "hang his hat" in Holton, KS, where he would spend many years taking care of other people's animals and livestock.
He also met and was engaged to Margaret Hund. Margaret was active in the 4-H program, so he joined in helping out too.
He loved sports and of course he was an AVID K-State fan, attending many men's basketball games, women's basketball games, football and baseball games. You would almost always find his TV on some type of sports program when you came to visit.
He gladly supported where needed and helped many students with scholarships to the vet program.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his fiancée; his brother Bob and sister-in-law Twila; brother-in-law Ben Brower; one niece Cheryl Brower and 2 nephews Jay Griffiths and Robert (Bob) Brower.
He leaves to mourn, his sister Shirley Brower; nieces Kimberly Ferro and Brenda Brower; nephews Matthew and Mark Griffiths; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends that he looked to as family.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Axtell, KS, where he was baptized and confirmed. He later joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2025 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton. Family will greet friends from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., before service time, at the church.
Burial with Military Honors will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Salem Lutheran Cemetery following a luncheon at Salem Lutheran Church, 2590 Navajo Rd., Axtell, KS.
