Michael McKinney

Topeka, formerly of Horton, KS
Michael Dean McKinney, 66, of Topeka, Kansas formerly of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
He was born on July 21, 1958, in Horton, Kansas the son of Buck Banks and Melvina Jessepe. Mike was raised on the Kickapoo Reservation and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with is children, grandchildren and his friends. Mike worked as a brick layer for several different companies. He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomie Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, Native American Church and Drum Religion.
Mike is survived by six daughters, Desiree Shopteese, Keanu Shopteese, Mikelyn McKinney, Lesley McKinney, Jonnah McKinney and Hannah McKinney, two sons, Dakota (Kack Kack) Shopteese and Keegan Shopteese, twenty grandchildren and one great grandson, two brothers, Jason "Zeke" Banks and Willie Banks. Mike was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, Carol Yazzie, seven brothers, Larry McKinney, Norris McKinney, Gerald McKinney, Joe McKinney, Harold McKinney, Maurice Banks and Doc Banks.
Native American Church services will be on Tuesday evening February 11, 2025, at Wayne Jessepe's home on the Kickapoo Reservation. Burial will be on Wednesday morning at the Mason Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation.
