Dorothy Jane Kalin was born on Feb 1, 1932 to Ervin and Edna (Wenzl) Frey in Steinauer, Nebr. She passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Oct 6, 2024 at the age of 92. Her father passed away when she was 7 years old on the day of her First Communion. She and her 5 siblings were raised by their mother. Dorothy played the organ at St. Anthony’s church while in school, and graduated from Steinauer High School in 1950.
Dorothy married Jerome Kalin on Jan 10, 1951 in Steinauer, and they had 9 children. She became a hard-working farmer’s wife, milking cows, feeding baby calves, pigs, chickens, collecting eggs to sell in bulk, planting a large garden, and raising children. They were members of Sacred Heart church in Burchard, and Dorothy belonged to the Altar Society. Jerome died suddenly on the farm on April 21, 1986.
Dorothy liked her daily soap operas, reading, playing the organ, baking, doing puzzles, gardening, and watching the wrens fly to and from the birdhouse. She loved her grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by children: Gary, Diann (Don) Stille, Karen (Todd) Kramer, Kathy, Annette (Mark) Stevens, Joyce, Robert and Janet (Dan) Yates. Sisters: Jeannie Gimenez, Joan Lafferty, Brother-in-law Emmet (Deloris) Kalin, Sisters-in-law Oliva Kalin, Mary Frey, and Kathy Frey. 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by parents, husband Jerome, infant son Larry, infant grandson Jeremy, daughter-in-law Ana Kalin, brothers Don, Glen and Ray, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Burchard, Nebraska, Father Michael Christensen officiating. Rosary at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation Friday, October 11, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska. Interment at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Steinauer, Nebraska, Memorials to family for a later destination. Online condolence may be left at www.wherrymortuary.com.
