Doris J. Ahrens

Doris J. Ahrens, 70, formerly of Powhattan, died September 27, 2024, at Rock Creek Assisted Living in Ottawa, KS.

Doris was born November 20, 1953, in Pittsburg, Kansas, one of three children born to Alfred and Elizabeth Strube Ahrens. When Doris was 10 years old, she and her family moved to Powhattan where she attended and graduated from the Powhattan schools. She then attended Highland Community Junior College and later Kansas State University, Manhattan.

Her working career included working several years as a telephone operator for United Telephone Co. in Hiawatha, later transferring to the Manhattan-Junction City area. While living in Manhattan, Doris later worked for Walden Books for 25 years before retiring. Doris spent the last year living close to family in Ottawa, Ks.

A lifetime member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Doris’ faith was a big part of her life. She grew up at Zion Lutheran in Powhattan, then while living in Manhattan, she was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where she was a faithful member of the handbell choir. Doris was dedicated to daily bible reading up until her death.

Survivors include a brother Timothy Ahrens (Susan) of Ottawa, two nephews, Tyler Ahrens of Ottawa and Tony Ahrens (Krista) of Tecumseh and their son, her great nephew, Luka; niece, Amanda Brewer (Alex) of Washington DC, and a host of cousins.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, and older sister, Juanita Ahrens.

A celebration of Doris’s eternal life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, October 4, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Pastor Michael Schmidt , of St. Luke’s, Manhattan, officiating.

The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.
