James " Jim " Lowe

James A. Lowe, 84, of Horton, Kansas, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away at the Atchison Hospital on September 3, 2024, just one day short of his 60th wedding anniversary with Sharon Lowe.

Jim was born November 23,1939 to William and Ruth Lowe of Powhattan, KS. He graduated from Powhattan High School in 1958. After high school he joined the National Guard and served for 10 years while at the same time working for Dallas Kurtz as a bookkeeper. He soon became a dozer operator for Kurtz and after 20 years, he ventured out on his own, starting Lowe Construction in 1980. He was the cubmaster of Pack 20 in Horton for almost 20 years and spent several years as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 112. He served on the Camp Geiger camp staff for several years and he was a Chieftain in the Tribe of Mic-o-Say. He loved the times he spent at camp with his son, Mike and other scouting family and friends. He was proud to have his son, Scott, join him in the business in 1994. Jim finally retired and sold his last dozer in 2018 at the age of 78 after building thousands of miles of terraces and waterways over the tri-county area.

He married Sharon Stevens September 4,1964 in Powhattan, KS and she still resides at the home they built in Horton. Other survivors include two sons, Mike (Jill) Lowe of Atchison and Scott (Debby) Lowe of rural Horton along with four granddaughters, Jayme Lowe, Mikayla Lowe, Camryn Lowe and Kelcie Lowe. Jim is also survived by his brother, Tommy (Debby) Lowe of Wichita and sister, Mary Jansen of Horton. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.

A visitation will be held at Dishon Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. on Friday September 6, 2024. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church north of Everest at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Burial will be at the Claytonville Cemetery south of Hiawatha. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Claytonville Cemetery, the Camp Geiger Maintenance Fund (PEC) or the Horton Fire Department.
