Alfred " Smitty" Huerter

Alfred Edwin “Smitty” Huerter, 94, of Goff, KS died on Friday morning, July 8, 2022 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Smitty was born on November 7, 1927, to Emil and Valeria Johnstone Huerter.  He grew up in the Goff community and attended Maple Shade Country School, Kelly Grade School and graduated from Goff High School in 1947.

Smitty helped his father on farm until he entered the US Air Force on December 11, 1947. He was assigned to the 5700th Air Base Squadron at Albrook Air Force Base in the Canal Zone in Panama. Smitty had 2 years, 9 months, and 30 days overseas during his 6 years military service. Smitty was discharged for the second time on December 10, 1953 at the rank of T/Sgt (T).

He married Iris H Bantel on February 14, 1953, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Smitty returned to the Goff community and returned to farming, later he was asked to be a substitute mail carrier, a position he held for 19 years prior to taking the position full-time for three years. He retired from the USPS on September 3, 1990. He also served as a township patrolman for six years, spending the remainder of his time farming, which was his passion.

He was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Goff American Legion Post #0316.

Smitty enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting John Deere tractors and watching anything western.

Smitty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Iris on February 23, 2014; he was also preceded in death by two sons, Randall D. Huerter on October 29, 2009 and Michael G. Huerter on September 2, 1986; three grandchildren, James G. Huerter on November 2, 1998, Michelle B. Huerter on May 11, 1981 and Stephanie A. Huerter on March 2, 1996; his brothers, William on November 18, 2017 and James on July 28, 2021.

Smitty is survived by two sons, Rick (Linda) Huerter of Seneca and Mark (Hannah) Huerter of Corning; his brothers, Robert Huerter of Chanute, KS and Daniel Huerter of Bellevue, NE; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
