Melba Nicol

Melba Nicol, 83, formerly of Mayetta, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at her home near Meriden.

She was born November 13, 1938 in Hoodriver, Oregon, the daughter of Melvin and Mary Jane Leonard Brown. She graduated from Silver Lake High School.

Melba operated a dog kennel for many years. She also was a seamstress, a foster parent, and had owned and operated Melba’s Diner in Mayetta.

She was a member of the Mayetta Christian Church, an EHU Unit, was a 4-H Leader, and had bowled in league bowling for many years.

She married William “Bill” Nicol on October 18, 1959 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2005.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Nicol (Lana), Topeka and Mitchell Nicol (Stephannie), Soldier; two daughters, Cheryl Marlane Nicol, Meriden and Marchelle Lane (Kevin), Topeka; fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 25th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Half Day Cemetery. Melba will lie in state after 10:00 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family and friends will meet from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Midland Hospice, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 1034, Holton, KS 66436.
