Gloria " Suzanne" Misenhelter

Gloria “Suzanne” Misenhelter, 71, of Holton, KS passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Holton Community Hospital, with family by her side; after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born September 28, 1947 in Kansas City, KS, at Bell Memorial Hospital (KU Med Center), the daughter of Amor and Maria R. (Talavera) Hurtado.

Suzanne graduated from DeSoto High School in 1965. She also attended Highland Community College and graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelors in Administration.

In early years, she worked as secretary to the agent at ATSF Railroad in Argentine, KS. Suzanne then began her career in nursing homes as an administrator for over 20 years at Jackson County Nursing Home; after retirement, she worked in marketing at Golden Eagle Casino and cashier at Prairie Band Potawatomi Casino. She also worked as an insurance agent for Shelter Insurance in Holton and later as a nursing home consultant in the surrounding areas. Suzanne also worked at the Holton Recorder.

Suzanne was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton, a member of Valley Falls OES Chapter and past Worthy Matron, a member of Holton OES Chapter, past member of Holton Business Women and she was the first female Hispanic to hold a secretary position for Kansas Nursing Home Assoc. She was also a member of Holton Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson County 4-H Leader and assisted in coaching summer fast-pitch girls’ softball team, member of Holton Art Club and also worked at Holton USD 336 with Hispanic students.

Suzanne’s greatest joy was cooking large family dinners on birthdays and holidays at her home. She also loved taking grandkids on many vacations around the United States.

She married Scott Howard Misenhelter on February 10, 1968 in Kansas City, KS, celebrating over 50 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Scott, of the home; her daughter Heidi Zibell (Brent) of Holton, KS; her son, Scott Misenhelter (Courtney) of Holton, KS; 9 grandchildren, Erika Zibell, Chaz Zibell, Alicia Branam (Brett), Jordan Moseley (Mercedes), Garrett “Lane” Misenhelter (Mallory), Jess Misenhelter (Maggie), Ashley Brock (Preston), Aidan Androes and Zac Irey; 5 great-grandchildren, Avery Myers, Brady Misenhelter, Serina Richter, Jazlynn Richter and Watson Richter; a sister, Andrea Carrillo (David) of Kansas City, KS and 2 brothers, Joseph S. Hurtado of Kansas City, MO and Thomas Hurtado (Judy) of Kanas City, KS.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary L. Hurtado and 4 brothers, Joseph, Fred, Rueben and Anthony Hurtado.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton. A luncheon and visitation will follow the service in the Family Life Center.
