Elsie “Nadine” Wheeler

Elsie “Nadine” Wheeler, 86, of rural Circleville and Soldier, went to her Heavenly Father on September 14, 2018 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka after a courageous battle with ALS.  Nadine was born July 5, 1932 on the family farm near Goff, Kansas, the second daughter to Alva and Elsie (Rutledge) Neal.  She graduated from Soldier High School.

She married Lester Wheeler on May 27, 1950.  They made their home near Soldier.  To this union 4 children were born. She worked in the food service industry for 32 years, starting at the Circleville School system and retired from Jackson Heights as the head cook.  She was known for her love of cooking, someone was always asking about cinnamon rolls, pies, or cookies. Nadine liked to bake, play cards, do puzzles, watch her grandkids play sports, watch college basketball, the Royals, read, and visit with family and friends. She was a member of the Soldier Christian Church.   

She is survived by her 4 children:  Wayne (Sue) Wheeler of Circleville; Kenny (companion Sara Wege) Wheeler of Westmoreland; Augusta Richardson of Topeka; and Becky (Steve) Milne of Wetmore.  Sister: Norma Murphy of Hoyt; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. 

She was preceded by her parents, husband, sister Roberta Vogel, and son-in-law, Edmond Richardson, Jr.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.  Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.  Interment will be in the Soldier Cemetery immediately following the service. Nadine will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home beginning Monday afternoon, September 17, 2018.
