Daniel “Dan” J. Hammes, 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 12, 2018 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital after his long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and skin cancer.

Dan was born to Eugene G. and Eleanor Wichman Hammes on September 27, 1950 in Seneca. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul High School graduating with the Class of 1968, they just celebrated their 50th class reunion. He started working early in his life and at the age of 10 he rode his bike to work at Fort Markley. By the age of 14, he bought his own combine and went on harvest with his dad and a group of people. In the 1960’s he bought his first dump truck and went to work with his dad. After he married he transitioned to more over the road trucking with Mike Bennett. He started Hammes Trucking, Inc. in 2001 and Hammes Repair, Inc. in 2008. In 2017 Dan retired due to his health but he continued to show interest in the business that he started.

On November 7, 1970 Dan married Shirley Ann Glissman at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. After their honeymoon to New Orleans they lived in Seneca until present day.

Dan was interested in numerous hobbies over the years such as watching his son Brad compete in drag racing, watching his grandchildren’s ballgames, going to tractor pulls and playing cards. He had tremendous joy in raising his children and his grandchildren and going on family vacations with them.

Dan was preceded in death by his father Eugene G. (Hummer) Hammes on July 16, 1987.

Dan is survived by his wife Shirley of 47 years, his children, Jason (Jill) Hammes of Seneca, Traci Hammes of Rossville, Brad (Amy) Hammes of Seneca. His mother Eleanor Hammes Connell of Seneca and his siblings, Alice Trower of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Doug Hammes of Seneca and Jim Hammes of Seneca. Five adorable grandchildren Taylor, Ashley, Isabelle, Stella and Mallory.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday, July 15th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday, July 16, 2018, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given in Dan’s memory to the COINS for a Cause and/or Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and sent in care of the family.
