Holton Girls Fall to McPherson in Defensive 4A Championship
03/10/2012

Class 4A State Girls Championship at Salina
McPherson 34 - Holton 27

If defense wins championships, then both McPherson and Holton deserved the 2012 girls 4A Title, because it was all about defense including an 8-7 Bullpup advantage at halftime Saturday in Salina.  The game was tied at 17-17 after three quarters and Holton capped a 10-0 run when Jayna Smith hit Holton's only trey of the night to go ahead 22-17 with more than six minutes to play.  Mac came back to tie the game at 22 and 25 then went ahead for good with Katelyn Loecker's two free throws and McPherson connected on 10 of 11 from the line to end the game.  No player scored in double-digits and Holton was led by Ryann Bowser with 8, while fellow senior Kylie Miller added 7.  Holton even forced 20 turnovers, (76 in 3 state games) but could not score in transition, and both teams made less than 30 percent from the field.  After winning seven state titles in Class 5A, the last coming in 2008, McPherson's girls now have a 4A Championship and finished the year with a 25-1 mark.  Holton also ended up 25-1, but failed to repeat as back-to-back undefeated state champs.  The five Holton senior starters end their high school career with a 98-4 record including four undefeated trips to state.  Although their 51 game win streak was snapped, with their only game decided by less than 14 points, they will take a 98 game consecutive win streak into next season of Big 7 League play.
