NV Boys Settle for Second in 3A State
03/10/2012

Scott City 61 - Nemaha Valley 47
3A Boys State Championship at Hutchinson

The Nemaha Valley boys placed second at Class 3A State in 2008, and in their return to Hutchinson in 2012, they matched that finish.  The Raiders, who had placed fourth the past three seasons at 2A State in Manhattan, struggled early Saturday and fell behind 18-3 after 8 minutes against the defending champs from Scott City.  While Nemaha Valley missed their first eight shots, Scott City made 5 of 7 from the start and led 20-3. Despite rallying from 12 points down against Central Heights in the semifinals Friday, NV could not recover in the title bout.  Nemaha Valley trailed 30-15 at halftime and got within 30-20, but never any closer.  Senior Alex Hermesch scored a game high 20 points while Justice McKernan added 11, but dynamic junior duo Trent Olberding and Creighton Brinker were held in check, combining to hit just 2-15 from the field.  The Raiders end the season with a 23-3 record, including a share of the Big 7 League Title for the first time since 2004.
