The #6 nationally ranked Highland women’s basketball team could not buy a shot in the first 15 minutes of the second half at W.S. Scott Auditorium against Cowley College and trailed by 15 point with five minutes to play. At that point, Janelle Saling (Lathrop, MO) ignited the Scotties with a traditional 3 point play that seemed to remove the lid from the basket, and the Highland women came storming back to win their 25th game of the year and sweep Cowley for the season, 65-63.
“I have been a part of some comebacks before, but our ladies did an incredible job tonight. We had some players really step up and make some big plays, and, as a group, would not quit. They won this game with will and determination,” said head coach B.J. Smith.
The Scotties led by as many as 10 in the first half, but turnovers plagued them all night and Cowley was able to close the gap to 31-27 at intermission. Smith said, “For the first 17 minutes we were really good, but we lost our focus just a little, and then in the second half we just took a lot of bad shots and had bad turnovers.”
Highland (25-2) will be on the road Saturday at Neosho County and then return home for Sophomore Night next Wednesday vs Allen County. “We will be honoring three sophomores next Wednesday, and I hope students and fans will come out to show their appreciation. These girls have done great things for our program,” said Smith.
