(MSC News)--Two St. Joseph parents have been charged in the death of their three-month-old child earlier this month.
KQ2-TV reports the Buchanan County Prosecutor's Office has charged the child's mother, 17-year-old Kyla Watson, with a felony count of endangering the welfare of a child. The child's father, 17-year-old Franklin Skeen Jr., has been charged with possession of a controlled substance.
According to court documents, the child was found cold, unresponsive and not breathing at their home on Mason Road June 1st when emergency responders arrived. The child was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, but later was pronounced dead.
Autopsy results showed the child died due to overlay. Both parents confessed to police they were co-sleeping with the infant at the time.
Investigators say the couple tested positive for marijuana and benzodiazepines.
Watson and Skeen are to appear in a Buchanan County courtroom Friday morning.
