(KNZA)--The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas held elections for four Tribal Council positions Monday.
Four of Seven Council positions were open for election and the four incumbent Tribal Council Members standing for re-election were all retained in office.
Elected were Fred Thomas, Vice Chair; Russell Bradley, Treasurer; Bernadette Thomas, Member; and, Jason Thomas, Member. They rejoin Lester Randall, Chairman; Carla Ramirez Cavin, Secretary; and Christina Wahwassuck, Member on the Tribal Council, which is the governing body of the Tribe.
All adult tribal members are allowed to vote in tribal elections, which is held in person at the Reservation during a special election. The term of office for council members is two years.
Following the elections, Tribal Council Chairman Lester Randall observed, “The reelection of the current leadership of the Kickapoo Tribe reinforces the fact the Tribe is moving in the right direction and its leaders have the confidence of our Members. We still have lingering issues relating to past Tribal Council members and the flawed decisions they made, but those matters are being addressed in Tribal Court and we will soon put that era in the past. The Tribal Council and our Members are continuing to move forward and the changes we have made have stabilized tribal finances and led to increased development and opportunities for the Tribe and
Tribal Members as evidenced by the recent dedication and opening of the Kickapoo Tribal Government Center and execution of a monumental water rights agreement with the State of Kansas.”
