(KNZA)--Repair work needed to Doniphan County roads as a result of last week's heavy rainfall dominated discussion at this week’s County Commission meeting.
Road Supervisor Bob Edie provided the Commission with a list of 16 roads in need of immediate repair. The Commission authorized Edie to work within the budget to complete the projects.
Three county residents met with the Commission to discuss needed repairs to Friendship Road, north K-7 Highway. The road collapsed last week after heavy rainfall caused Wolf River to swell out of its banks.
The Board granted Commissioner Tim Collins the authority to negotiate the purchase of ground from adjoining landowners in order to relocate and build up the road and then bring it back to the Commission for final approval.
The county residents said they would provide the equipment and labor for the project, if the county would provide the fuel.
The road will remain closed until repairs are made.
County Emergency Management Director Julie Meng told the Commission in order to apply for federal or state emergency assistance, Doniphan County would have to incur a total of more than $28,000 in project costs, with each project having repair costs of at least $3,000. In addition, the state of Kansas would need to incur 4 million dollars in damages statewide related to the same event.
