(KAIR)--A suggested change in oversight for the Atchison County Lake has not yet gained traction, despite recent discussion regarding the possibility.
That happened through email correspondence on the matter, between two Atchison County Commissioners, and Road and Bridge Superintendent Seth Howard.
In the email exchange, dated June 14, Howard, citing a complaint made at the Commission's meeting earlier that day regarding improper boating, suggested the elimination of the position of lake caretaker.
Instead, he suggested utilizing the Sheriff's Office for patrols at that location, with road and bridge staff to “maintain the mowing and other odd end things as needed.”
Just over two hours later, 3rd District County Commissioner Bill Pohl replied to Howard, saying “Seth, I like the way you're thinking.”
A short time later, 2nd District Commissioner Eric Noll weighed in through an email to Pohl, saying “ I like this idea, too. But do we open up the lake for a free for all with no one watching? Maybe we get through election, we sell it?”
Noll was apparently referring to the August 2nd Primary Election, in which both he and Pohl faced Republican challengers.
MSC News inquired about the correspondence in emails sent to the two Commissioners.
Pohl, in his reply, said they “are looking at all options about the lake.”
Noll, in his response said the idea “was in context of saving tax dollars in the long range of County operations. No real discussion was held by the Commisison on the subject after the email.”
The correspondence was among numerous emails obtained through an open records request made by MSC News in August.
