Hiawatha Airport Board Re-Established

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Municipal Airport Board has been re-established as the city plans to seek a grant for an airport development plan.

The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening approved an amendment to the municipal code changing the makeup of the airport board from 5 to 7 members. The board will consist of 1-2 city commissioners, at least three city residents and the rest users of the airport and/or residents of Brown County.

City Administrator Mike Nichols says control of the airport will shift back to the Commission, with the Airport Board serving in an advisory role.

Appointed to staggering terms on the airport board were Duke Koerperich, Jim Reigle, Floyd McElwain, Matt Tietjens, Heath Simmer and Commissioners John Sheeran and Bill Collins.

The Commission gave Nichols approval to seek an Airport Improvement Program grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation to develop a plan to guide future development of the Hiawatha Airport.

If awarded, the grant would fund 95 percent of the $125,000 project cost. The city would be responsible for the remaining five percent or $6,250.
