Zoning Change Approved For Hiawatha Housing Project
08/05/2016

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved a zoning change, clearing the way for a proposed new senior housing development in the northeast portion of the community.

The Commission during a special meeting Thursday morning approved an ordinance rezoning several lots on Aztec Avenue in the Pleasant View Second Addition from a R-2 to R-3 district.

The action came on the recommendation of the city Planning Commission.

Manhattan-based Action Pact announced in June plans for a two phase development at the location.

The company says the $5.4 million first phase will consist of two skilled nursing homes designed to reflect family-style living.

The second phase will consist of independent living cottages, which will include nine small homes designed to accommodate a senior or a couple ready to downsize.

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.  The company says when completed, the project will have more than 30 employees.
