(KNZA)--A blown tire is blamed as the cause of a Hoyt fire truck rollover wreck that claimed one life in Jackson County late Wednesday afternoon.
Dead is 47-year-old Michael Schultz. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the Hoyt resident was behind the wheel of the truck, southbound on U.S. Highway 75.
His passenger, 36-year-old Randy Rae Smith, of Mayetta, suffered disabling injuries, and was transported to Topeka's Stormont Vail HeathCare for treatment.
The Patrol says neither man was properly restrained when the wreck happened shortly before 5:00.
The Patrol says the fire truck was traveling just south of 174th Road when a tire blew out. That caused the truck to leave the roadway to the left, cross the median, and then cross the southbound lanes of traffic. It then struck the embankment and overturned.
A stretch of the highway, from 174th to 166th Roads, was shut down for hours following the deadly crash.
