Glen Gross, photography instructor at Highland Community College, is joined by other faculty members each spring on a unique and gratifying journey with students to capture the images of landscape in the West. The results of the trip are now on display in the north hallway of the Communications Technology Building on the Highland campus. Those images are open to the public for viewing from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday until August 5.
Gross and his students visited four national parks on this trip: Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes National Parks. The group was on the road for eight days and camped in each park with the assistance of retiring Highland instructor/Klinefelter Farm Manager Wendell Ganstrom who helped the students learn camping and cooking skills. In addition to photography and camping skills, the students learned to write about their experiences and discussed the topic of sustainability and the preservation of these natural areas of our country. Gross noted that the exhibit is quite enjoyable as the students “have some very interesting photographs to share”.
The images from two of the students, Kayla Bryant (Needles) and Casey Childress (Sand Dunes), demonstrate the quality of the work on display. Bryant (Baldwin City) and Childress (Hutchinson) are both returning sophomores for the approaching academic year. This was the 14th year for Gross and his colleagues to take students on a landscape trip to national parks.
