Name Change Approved for Local Creek
07/15/2016

(KNZA)--A name change is approved for a creek in Brown and Doniphan counties.

The Brown County Commission this week was informed that the U.S. Board on Geographical Names has approved a proposal to change the name of Squaw Creek near White Cloud to Nolands Creek.

The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska sought the name change, saying the name Squaw Creek is considered derogatory by tribal members.

The Tribe proposed the creek be changed to its original name of Nolands Creek as indicated on an 1856 map of the area.
