Former Commish: Leave History Alone
07/06/2016

(KAIR)--A push to preserve history in the form of the Atchison County Logo.
That message was delivered to the Atchison County Commission Tuesday by former County Commissioner George Ross, Jr.  “I strongly, strongly encourage you to not change the Atchison County flag,” Ross told the Commission during their afternoon session. “I ask that you continue to keep this as our flag, fly it high, and prominent, everywhere that we can, and that it continue to represent us in every way.”
The idea to change the county seal and flag has been in the discussion phase for sometime, including a contest for residents to design the new logo.
Originally on the agenda for Tuesday’s Commission meeting, was a review of the  results from a county-wide survey reviewing three options for a new logo.
However, when Ross learned of the proposed change, he went to work to stop it, joined in his effort by fellow commissioners: Tom Wagner, Russ Eckert and Floyd Oswald who all accompanied him Tuesday to voice opposition to the change.
The current commissioners were apologetic to the former commissioners and assured that the logo will not be altered.
Instead, the Commission discussed potential efforts to educate Atchison County residents about the history of the flag.
They also approved a motion to give each County Commissioner, along with any elected county official with more than 20-years of service, a county flag upon their exit.
