Suspicious Robbery Lands Two In Jail

Stephen Searcy and Sondra Stutz

(KAIR)--Nearly two months after the investigation was launched, two arrests are made in connection with what was reported as a strong armed robbery at an Atchison retail store.

However, investigators, after the probe began, said they did not believe it happened as they had been told. “This was not the robbery it was originally reported as,” Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson tells MSC News.

34-year-old Atchison resident Stephen Searcy was arrested Saturday on charges including conspiracy to falsely reporting a crime and felony theft.

The alleged crimes are in connection with the May 11th case at Dollar General.
Early that morning, police were notified that a female employee had been forced into the store, as she opened the doors for business, held captive, and robbed.
Additionally, police were told the employee's vehicle had been stolen from the store's parking lot, and a search for the SUV resulted in its discovery in rural Atchison County by Sheriff's Deputies. “The suspects had tried to light the vehicle on fire, but due to the rain that night, it didn't work out very well,” Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie tells MSC News. The vehicle did not incur any major damage from the attempt, which has led to arson related charges for 32-year-old Nortonville resident Sondra Stutz, who was arrested Tuesday.

The District Court warrant, issued Tuesday for her arrest, follows a review made by Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckelman.

Along with arson and conspiracy to commit arson, Stutz is charged, in the formal complaint, with theft, conspiracy to commit interference with a law enforcement officer, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Searcy is additionally accused of a theft that occurred June 26th in the 200 block of North 12th Street and a July 1st theft in the 1400 block of Atchison Street. The misdemeanor thefts involved electronic items.

Both Searcy and Stutz were booked into the Atchison County Jail following their arrests.
