(KAIR)--A Wildlife Management class at a local school takes top state honors in a nationwide competition.
Named the Kansas Winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest is the class from Jackson Heights.
As part of the award, the wildlife management class will receive $20,000 in Samsung technology products, along with an opportunity to win additional prizes.
In a press release issued by Jackson Heights, Environmental Educator Gary Keehn says each year his class tries to find a way to be innovative and creative, and Samsung Solve for Tomorrow allows the students to see they are appreciated for the hard work they do.
School Principal Darren Shupe says Jackson Heights is thankful for the opportunity Samsung has provided to the students.
The contest is a nationwide competition to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math by challenging teachers and students to take topics out of traditional classroom setting and into local communities.
The wildlife management class is doing just that, putting their focus on improving water quality and quantity in the local community. That “Lets Make Every Drop Count” initiative moves the class into the third round of the competition, which includes creation of a 2 to 3 minute video to showcase how the students implement the idea to help the community.
The Jackson Heights Wildlife Management class is one of 51 state winners in the contest, and the first time the students have earned the win.
