(KAIR)--The Leavenworth Heritage Center is the destination Friday for United States Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins as she continues to push to keep Guantanamo Bay detainees from being transferred to the local area.
Jenkins will be joined by fellow Kansas Republican Mike Pompeo, of the 4th District, during the town hall meeting which begins at 9:00 in the morning.
Jenkins has been an outspoken critic of the Obama Administration's plans to close Guantanamo Bay and transfer the detainees to the mainland. Fort Leavenworth is on the list of possible locations for the transfer.
Obama has long stated closing the facility as a goal of his Presidency.
Proponents of the plan, including the ACLU, cite the fact that many of the detainees remain without charge or trial.
Opponents say moving them to the mainland will increase the threat of terrorist attacks.
The most recent information indicates that just over 100 detainees remain imprisoned at Gitmo.
Jenkins, citing a Fox News report that a former prisoner is now an Al-Qaeda leader, says such “dangerous Guantanamo Bay detainees should not be moved “next door to families simply trying to live their lives.”
