Preliminary Hearing Set In Atchison Murder Case
12/07/2015

(KAIR)--A preliminary hearing is now scheduled for the man accused of committing a fatal September shooting in the parking lot of an Atchison convenience store.

A status hearing for Terell Dixon was held Monday in Atchison County District Court.

That followed a continuance of the hearing last month when his attorney requested additional time to prepare for the case.

Monday's hearing resulted in the scheduling of a preliminary hearing, now set to happen on the morning of January 19th in an Atchison County courtroom. Dixon is charged with one count of 2nd degree murder.

Dixon is accused of the September 9th fatal shooting of 24-year-old Atchison resident Winston Downing. Downing apparently confronted Dixon regarding a past altercation involving a family member, and that's when the probable cause affidavit says Dixon shot Downing in the head with a semi-automatic handgun. The document states that Downing was holding a handgun at the time of the altercation.

Fleeing the scene on foot, Dixon was apprehended 18-hours later in Henry County, Missouri, halfway between Kansas City and Springfield, and taken into custody on an Atchison County warrant for 2nd Degree Murder.

Later extradited from Missouri to Kansas, Dixon remains jailed on a bond of $500,000.
