(KAIR)--An apparent hunting accident has claimed the life of a Winchester man.
The self-inflicted gunshot wound happened around 7:45 Monday morning in a rural Jefferson County location, east of Winchester.
The Topeka Capital-Journal identifies the victim as 53-year-old Gene Robertson.
The report, citing Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, says it appears Robertson was shot by his own gun while hunting south of 150th and Wallace Road.
His father discovered Robertson’s body when he saw the dome light of Robertson’s truck had been left on.
Sheriff's Deputies were joined by emergency responders in rushing to the scene, where Robertson was pronounced dead.
The investigation is ongoing, with Herrig telling the newspaper it appears Robertson was shot either getting in or out of the truck.
