Wildlife Checkpoint Details Made Public

(KAIR)--The details are released regarding a poaching checkpoint conducted east of Atchison, Kansas, in Buchanan County, Missouri, on November 22nd. 

The information related to the operation was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request made by MSC News to the Missouri Department of Conservation. That agency conducted the checkpoint in conjunction with the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office.

All westbound vehicles traveling from Winthrop, Missouri to Atchison were stopped and questioned during the wildlife road check, which lasted four hours on that Sunday.   

514 vehicles were stopped during the effort, with 25 of the vehicles investigated for wildlife related activity. 36 people in those vehicles were further investigated after being stopped, with 27 vehicle occupants further questioned about hunting and fishing activity. 

Those investigations led to the discovery of 19 wildlife violations, with nine citations issued and three warnings documented.

(1) Take deer without a permit (nonresident)

(1) Possess resident permits while not being a legal resident of Missouri

(1) Obtain landowner permits through false application

(1) Loan deer permit to another

(1) Use permit on deer taken by another

(2) Illegal possession/transportation of deer or parts thereof

(2) Fail to check deer properly
