(NRN)-- Many homeowners are just starting to notice unwelcome intruders - mice. University of Nebraska - Lincoln Extension Wildlife Specialist Dennis Ferraro says your best defense against these rodents is to prevent their entry into the home. He suggests using steel wool and caulking to seal up holes, but warns that if you have garage doors, it is nearly impossible.

Ferraro says the best way to get rid of mice that already made their way inside is to trap them. He says for an average garage and basement it is a good idea to use about a dozen traps. On average, mice cause about $20-million in damage to buildings, belongings and stored feed in Nebraska every year.

He issues a word of warning if you decide to use poison to rid your home of these invaders. It takes a few days for a mouse to die and then you have to find it or face a bad odor for a few days until you find it. If it died inside a wall the odor could linger even longer.
