Area Ag Leader Remembered
11/10/2015

John Junior Armstrong

(KAIR)--A longtime Atchison County agriculture leader has died.

John Junior Armstrong was 91 at the time of his death Sunday at the Winchester Senior Care Center.

Armstrong, a resident of Muscotah, is remembered for his leadership in ag-based roles, especially his time of service for the Kansas Farm Bureau.

According to his obituary from the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, in Horton, Armstrong served as President of the Kansas Farm Bureau from 1972 to 1983. During his time in the role, Armstrong filed violations with NLRB against the Longshoremen for their unwillingness to load US ships with wheat to Russia. That led to opening up trade for what became known as the “Great Russian Wheat Sale”. He also played a role in eliminating property tax for machinery and livestock, and was successful in removing the sales tax on repairs.

Armstrong is also credited for originating the idea for Kansas to form a sister-state relationship with Henan providence in China, and he carried the signed agreement to China on behalf of Kansas.

Among numerous other roles, Armstrong served on both the Kansas Wheat Commission and the US Wheat Associates Board, positions now held by his son, Jay.

Services for Armstrong will be Thursday afternoon at 1:00 at the Muscotah United Church.
