Lewiston Awarded USDA Funding for Wastewater Improvements

(KMZA)--The Pawnee County village of Lewiston has been awarded $458,000 in funding through USDA Rural Development to upgrade the community’s existing wastewater facilities and to construct new facilities.

USDA Secreetary Tom Vilsack announced Wednesday loans and grants for 141 projects to build and improve water and wastewater infrastructure in rural communities across the nation. Lewiston was among two Nebraska communities awarded funding.

Mary Sneckenberg, community programs specialist with USDA Rural Development, says the funding will ensure the Village’s wastewater system will meet health and sanitary standards, specifically the standard for ammonia and E. coli in treatment effluent. Sneckenberg says the project will alleviate the problem by reusing the treated wastewater in production agriculture.

Village of Lewiston Chairperson Jim Kinghorn expressed his appreciation for the assistance USDA provided in helping the Village obtain the funding needed for their wastewater needs.
