(NRN)-- Pirates, zombies and princesses will soon be knocking at your door asking for treats and the Nebraska Regional Poison Center wants to make sure it is a safe Halloween for all. Medical Director Dr. Ron Kirschner recommends having children eat a meal before trick-or-treating so they are less tempted to grab a quick snack out of their bag before getting home.
Dr. Kirschner wants everyone to have a fun Halloween but he says it is very important that all candy is checked carefully by adults.
Marijuana edibles come in many shapes and sizes and wrappers resemble traditional candy names and packaging. The wrappers on marijuana edibles may say "Munchy Way" instead of "Milky Way" or "Buddahfinger" instead of "Butterfinger". He says homemade treats or candy out of its original wrapper should be thrown away unless you know the person who provided the treat.
He says those with questions or concerns can call the poison center 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222.
One of the most common calls to the Nebraska Regional Poison Center on Halloween involves glow sticks. while they do an excellent job of making children more visible in the dark, they can break and leak the glowing liquid onto a child. Last year the Poison Center managed 388 calls concerning glow sticks.
That number is 1-800-222-1222.
