(KMZA)--The continuation of a scam, targeting Nemaha County businesses, has caught the attention of law enforcement.
That follows the recent successful attempt by a scammer to make off with nearly $9,000 from a rural Sabetha business.
Nemaha County Sheriff Rich Vernon is working to warn others about the scam, which he says is conducted through email. "People send emails acting as employees wanting money to be wire transferred or cashiers checks sent to particular banks or addresses in an attempt to get money from people."
Vernon says verification, prior to sending any money, is a must to avoid being ripped-off. "We would ask that anytime you do anything over email or over computer that you confirm with who it is on the other end first before you send any money. It's much easier to stop it before you send the money than it is to try to get the money back once it's been sent," Vernon says. "These people emailing will often pose as an employee of the company or someone that is known to those people in the company by using very close to email addresses or even what is called spoofing email addresses."
Vernon says anyone who has been a victim to the scam should notify law enforcement immediately.
